Desert Island Tuesday is inspired by Desert Island Discs. I imagine myself a castaway on a desert island and am allowed to have a few items with me, based on the theme for the week. This week theme is Entertainment.
Hello again from a warm, tropical island! I’ve been eating a lot of make-believe fish and rice the past week. The monkeys have been entertaining me with their silly tricks but I think I’m getting tired of the same routine. Luckily this week’s Entertainment week so I’m allowed to order a couple of discs online. My top 3 music albums and movies are listed below. Enjoy!
Albums
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles – Quintessential album with everything – catchy positivity(It’s Getting Better) and epic masterpiece (A Day in the Life)
The Great Escape by Blur – Full of happy tunes and sweet memories of my teen years
Life in Cartoon Motion by Mika – Love Today! Lollipop! Relax! Happy Ending! You can’t go wrong with this.
Movies
Amélie – Beautiful, triumphant, quirky, special, funny, charming. A feel-good movie I could just watch over and over again.
Lost in Translation – Loneliness. Strangers. Foreign country. Kinda like being on a desert island.
Labyrinth – David Bowie dancing his magic dance…in tights. INSTANT WIN?!!

I thought I could be excused for not having an iPod because I’ve been working from home for the past couple of years. Then I found out that my mama, yes my 60-plus-year-old mother has one! It’s probably a hand-me-down from my bro but still! Embarrassingly, she had to show me how to use it because I’ve never touched one before! I haven’t even bought a CD this year. Wait, do people still buy CDs?
What’s this talk about iPods? Well, today being “New Monday” and this week theme being “Entertainment” I’m gonna listen to someone else’s playlist – namely my mama and my brother.
Selection from Mama’s List
Habib Koité – Baro
Salif Keita – Folon
Mark Brown feat. Sarah Cracknell – The Journey Continues
Her playlist is quite unpredictable. There will be a couple of world music tracks and suddenly there’s a Clay Aiken or Fergie sandwiched in between. I think I’m in love with African music now, especially the ones coming from Mali.
Selection from Bro’s List
Yael Naim – New Soul
Kate Nash – Pumpkin Soup (Love the fun video!)
Duffy – Mercy
His list is mostly made up of the latest hip/hop and rock artistes. I just picked a couple that didn’t look familiar. They were all quite good. I feel like I’ve heard New Soul somewhere before. (Update: Ah it’s song for the Macbook commercial )
Now, why don’t you guys try listening to something new today?

“We’re Brothers Forever” is playing repeatedly in my head now. If we had more people like him in the world, there wouldn’t be a need for wars. Seriously! Even Simon Cowell was smiling. Ha ha!
