The Power of A Dream
Pangea Day and A Doodle of A Daydreaming Cat

10th May was Pangea Day.

“Pangea Day is a global event bringing the world together through film. In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it’s easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves in others – through the power of film.”

I missed the actual screening (2am local time) but managed to catch the last half hour of the repeat telecast yesterday. I watched the one-hour highlight and a couple more videos at Pangea.org. I thought the requirements for the event meant that only films with the power to inspire and effect a positive change were accepted, but I find some of the entries were selected based on aesthetic values instead of content. Nevertheless, it offers an interesting look at the different cultures of the world and among the ones I’ve watched, I do have more than few favourites (these are all short clips of less of about 5 minutes or less):

Mutual Recognition – Love is a wonderful thing
Encounter Point – There’s always room for hope
Stille Post (Chinese Whispers) – A childhood game, with a twist
Combatants for Peace- Making peace an option

This event was dreamt by Jehane Noujaim, an Egyptian American documentary film director, as her 2006 TED prize wish. Her wish video is an inspiration in itself, a testament to the power of a dream.

On the topic of dreaming, today’s Doodle Week theme is Doodle Daydream. Here’s a sketch of Fat Cat dreaming of peace, love, happiness and harmony. Or is he just thinking of a nice meal? :O
